FIRST TIME MAKING WINE?

Making wine fulfills all the requirements of a good hobby: It can provide relaxation, its product is rewarding, and the opportunity for social networking with like-minded people is amazing. The rewards will be satisfying; it is an investment in your wellbeing! When you make the decision to take on winemaking as a hobby, you should start by doing some research. Here are some basic tips to get you started on your winemaking journey. 1. Choose the right equipment: This is probably the most important decision you will make when starting out. You do not need to spend a fortune on fancy gadgets, but you will need to purchase some basic equipment. A basic starter kit can be a great way to get started, as it will come with everything you need to get started making wine. If you decide to forgo the kit, you will need to purchase a primary fermenter (a food-grade plastic bucket or tub with a lid), a secondary fermenter (a glass or plastic carboy), an airlock and stopper, some tubing, a hydrometer, and some basic cleaning supplies. 2. Choose the right kit: The quality of your wine will be directly related to the quality of the kit you use. If you are making a light bodied, or heavy bodied wine kit, make sure you pick the bodied of kit you want to drink. 3. Sanitize, sanitize, sanitize with B-Brite: This cannot be stressed enough. Everything that meets your wine must be clean and free of bacteria. This includes all your equipment, as well as your hands. A simple solution of bleach and water can be used to sanitize your equipment, or you can purchase a commercial sanitizer. 4. Follow the directions: This may seem like common sense, but it is important to follow the instructions that come with your wine kit or recipe to the letter. Do not try to shortcut the process or take shortcuts, as this can result in subpar wine. 5. Be patient: Making wine is not an overnight process. Depending on the type of wine you are making, it can take several weeks or even months to complete the fermentation process. Do not be tempted to bottle your wine too early, as this can result in bottles exploding or wines that are corked and undrinkable. Making wine can be a fun and rewarding hobby, as long as you take the time to do it right. By following these basic tips, you can be on your way to making quality wine that you and your friends can enjoy for years to come. Cheers!
